unequivocally raised the banner against Bolshevism; in fact, he considera it his sacred mission to take the lead in eradicating from China this most pernicious influence. He has formalated definite plans to deal with the situation in South China, As soon as Nankou and Huai Lai have fallen into the hands of the allied troops, he will come South to direct military operations against Chiang Kai-shek and Tang Sheng-chi. He has already reached an agreement with Marshal Chang Tao-lin whereby the latter will assume chief responsibility in the warfare against Feng Yu-hsiang so as to enable him personally to take the lead against Chiang Kai-shek. Wu is satisfied that Chang Tso-lin will stand by him in the fight against Feng, though neither he nor anyone else can foretell what Chang's attitude would be after the attainment of their common object. In view of

Chang'a close and loyal co-operation with him, Tu is confi-

dent that before long Feng Yu-hsiang's aries will be destroye

ed, and then Chang can give him some assistance in his

campaign against Chiang Kai-shek.

As regards General Sun Chuan-fang, the Marshal gives

the assurance that Sun is with him, and will actively co-

operate with him in the fight against Bolshevism in Central

and South China. Sun has given Wu a definite undertaking in

this sense, and it is only the exigencies of the military

situation that have rendered it undesirable to publish this

secret agreement. It has been arranged between Wu and Sun

to let the Bolshevist armies, in the first instance, go as far away as possible from their principal bese, Kwongtung,

before the allied forces would use their greatest efforts

against them, so as to beat them thoroughly. If Sun were not sincerely supporting Wu, he would not have given Yu $1,200,000 out of the salt revenue, and a large quantity

of ammunition, to help him in his campaign against Feng.

This tangible help was published in several papers at the

time
